MUMBAI: For 8,000 housing societies built over collector lands in Mumbai region 50 to 60 years ago, there is yet another hurdle in their redevelopment.
According to residents, other than fulfilling 90% backward class membership in the existing buildings, the new GR issued by the social justice department of the state government also mandates 20% membership of OBCs in the new additional component of flats to be built as part of redevelopment.
Moreover, the premium to be paid by 20% OBC members in the new building component will be decided by the government, said Vijay Patel, an activist in the cooperative housing societies movement. The condition has been mooted under post war rehabilitation-219 scheme for the backward class. Patel said these conditions will never help old structures to redevelop. Around 8 lakh families live in these buildings.
