A moderator of a subreddit on drones angrily quit in a frustrated message to the community after they said a swarm of "idiotic" conspiracy theories made the site unbearable.
u/Nanosauromo was one of the moderators on the subreddit r/drones, a section of Reddit that focused solely on discussions about the technology. However, the moderator quit his role after an influx of people sought to discuss the recent mysterious drone sightings in New Jersey.
In a now-deleted message titled "Actually, you know what, screw it. I'm out," the user wrote that the surge of "idiotic discourse" as well as people not really knowing what kinds of posts were allowed ultimately caused them to give up their role, as reported by The Independent.
"Seriously, if you guys were seeing all the posts I've been removing for the past couple weeks, you'd be sick of this place too. I'll basically say my final piece on the situation here: It's all bulls***," u/Nanosauromo wrote in the deleted post obtained by The Independent.
"These people report their own cases of seeing 'drones' that are really videos of ordinary airplanes, helicopters, or stars or planets in the sky (I've seen countless such pictures and videos and yes, this describes them all), which leads to more media coverage," the user continued.
u/Nanosauromo had been moderating the subreddit containing hundreds of thousands of members since 2020. r/drones has since announced that six new moderators will be taking over their role, and posted a message Thursday saying that any posts contributing to conspiracy theories or hysteria "have no place here" and will be removed.
Residents across New Jersey have reported seeing the drones since mid-November. Questions about where the drones are coming from have since escalated, garnering national attention.
While the Department of Homeland Security, the Federal Aviation Administration, the Defense Department and the FBI issued a statement earlier this week saying that the drones are not believed to be a threat to the public, several lawmakers have spoken out, urging officials to figure it out.
Earlier this month, a Republican assemblywoman said that state and federal agencies' statements were "incredibly misleading." Meanwhile, another state Republican started a rumor that the drones were being launched by an Iranian "mothership" positioned off the East Coast, without offering any evidence.
Gov. Phil Murphy also expressed concerns in a letter to President Joe Biden last week. However, the president told reporters Tuesday, "So far no sense of danger."
