Red faced Tommy Bowe defends buying wife 'unimpressive' Christmas gift on Ireland AM

Tommy Bowe was forced to defend himself on live Virgin Media television this morning after admitting he bought his wife a hoover as a Christmas present.

The Virgin Media presenter was hosting a segment on weird Christmas gifts alongside fellow presenter Muireann O’Connell. The discussion prompted Muireann to reveal that Tommy himself was no stranger to unconventional presents, having bought his wife Lucy Whitehouse a hoover several Christmases ago.

Tommy, mildly embarrassed, admitted that the gift didn’t go down as well as expected. However, he doubled down on the usefulness of the purchase, as the hoover is still in use in the Bowe family home.

He told Virgin Media viewers: “It didn’t go down great, but we’re still here together, just about, to tell story. The hoover is still working anyways and gets some use.”

Callers chimed in with their own horror stories about unwanted Christmas presents. One listener slammed the notion of buying hoovers as Christmas presents- but agreed with Tommy in terms of their practicality.

Muireann read out the listener’s response, which was: “I got a hoover for Christmas 16 years ago and I was extremely unimpressed. However, the hoover is still going- unlike the relationship.”

Another listener story prompted Tommy to reveal he’d previously bought another domestic present for his wife: this time a sewing machine. The caller described her 15-year-old cousin’s disdain at receiving a sewing kit, which spurred Tommy on to admit he’d bought a similar item for his wife.

Muireann saw the funny side of the gift giving saga but was quick to describe Tommy’s wife as “long suffering” due to his antics. He did not give any hints about the nature of the presents put aside for this year.
