Red Bull relief as they only 'commit minor breach' of budget cap in blow to Mercedes

Red Bull bosses are set to breathe a big sigh of relief with the team having only committed a 'minor breach' of their 2021 budget cap, according to the Daily Mail.

Across last week's Singapore Grand Prix, rumours circulated that both Red Bull and Aston Martin could face sanctions for allegedly breaching their budget cap last term.

It was alleged that the Milton-Keynes based team had gone £10 million over their £114 million budget, however Christian Horner vehemently denied any claims about exceeding the limit. And it seems his confidence in his setup was correct with Red Bull said to have only committed a minor breach - if at all.

The results of the investigation by the FIA are set to be released on Wednesday, however there is a slight chance there could be some delay with the governing body not wanting to 'be falling in line with deadlines set by anybody else'.

And according to the Daily Mail, a source said the 'discrepancy could be as little as a million or so, perhaps even less, and is no more than a "procedural" breach'. The news is set to be a blow for their rivals at Mercedes and seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton.

There were reports that Max Verstappen could well be stripped of his maiden world title in which he won last campaign, if Red Bull were guilty of severe breaches, and handed to Hamilton. The pair played out one of Formula 1's all time great finales, as the Dutchman prevailed on the very final lap of the season in Abu Dhabi.

However, it seems that due to the Milton Keynes-based setup's reported overspending being so minor the title will in fact be staying with Verstappen. The Red Bull man had the opportunity to tie up back-to-back world championships at Sunday in Singapore.

But it was not to be for the Dutch star as he could only manage a seventh place finish following a number of errors, whilst his teammate Sergio Perez passed the chequered flag first.

Speaking afterwards, the frustated Dutchman said: "t the start, with the anti-stall, [I] lost even more spots. You put yourself in an even more difficult position. I got past a few cars but then I got stuck. Just impossible to pass.

"Once I was in a decent position, I tried to go for a move on Lando but somehow I completely bottomed out when I hit the brakes, so my front wheels came up in the air and I massively locked up and had flat spots. So I had to box again, put new tyres on. I got back into the points but of course, not what we wanted. After [Saturday], you cannot ask for more."
