Reckless Edinburgh motorbike rider slaloms traffic and pulls stunts on busy road

Shocking video footage of a balaclava clad yob riding a motorbike into traffic in Edinburgh has emerged online.

The shocking video was taken along Calder Road towards the city centre on Sunday, August 7. It shows the rider performing reckless wheelies as it tears down the road and swerves traffic.

The bike appears to have had the licence plate removed. The rider was wearing a balaclava and no helmet.

A local who witnessed the yob said they were driving erratically and filmed them on their cars dashcam. This comes as local youths dangerously riding motorbikes continues to be a problem in the capital and the Lothians this summer.

On August 6, a 10-year-old girl was knocked down while she was walking on a footpath by a motorcyclist in West Lothian. And reports of stolen motorbikes have become an increasingly common feature of Edinburgh this summer.

We spoke to the driver who took the dashcam footage, who wishes to remain anonymous, he said: “As we exited the roundabout at Saughton I became aware of a loud motorcycle, in my rear view and side mirror I could see it approaching erratically, but I didn't think the rider would try and make the gap between my car and the bus (as the dashcam is very wide angle it makes the gap appear larger than it was).

“When the bike passed us we could see it was unregistered / index plate removed and that the rider wasn't wearing a helmet, rather, a face concealing balaclava. I told my wife to close her window as the riders appearance and demeanour made me uneasy.

“We followed at a flowing traffic pace and observed the rider straying into oncoming traffic, pulling wheelies etc. This continued until the junction at Hutchison Road, where we turned left on to Balgreen Road and the rider skipped the red light, proceeding on to Gorgie Road.

“I was glad when they were out of our way as apart from anything else, they were a distraction.

“I posted the video on social media tagging the local police just in case the rider had been involved in any other crime – the balaclava struck me as unusual, perhaps pointing towards premeditation.

“At one point on the video the rider is travelling directly towards oncoming traffic, in one instance at a point where the driver had just joined the A71 from a side road, so they must have got a bit of a fright.”

Police Scotland has been approached for comment.
