Recent Manchester United target Brendan Rodgers under mounting pressure at Leicester

Brendan Rodgers is under mounting pressure to continue as coach of Leicester City.

Sources say the Leicester dressing room has started to turn against Rodgers, who has been under consideration at Manchester United to become their next manager, since his excoriating comments in the wake of their FA Cup mauling by Nottingham Forest on Sunday.

Leicester lost 2-0 at Liverpool on Thursday night and are winless in three in the Premier League, while a dressing room source described Rodgers' situation as 'not good'.

After the 4-1 thrashing by rivals Forest, Rodgers said: “There are a lot of these players, between now and the end of the season, who need to prove that they are still worthy of being here. That’s why a lot of these players are not top players, because they can’t sustain it.

“There are players here that may have achieved everything that they can. It’s something we’ll have to look at between now and the end of the season. Until then, they’ve got to have a look at themselves in the mirror and fight like hell to prove they’re good enough to be here.

“I said to the players that for the first time since I’ve been here I’ve been embarrassed. It was an awful performance and I have to apologise to the supporters.”

Leicester host West Ham on Sunday and are languishing 12th in the league table, having finished fifth in the last two seasons.

Should Rodgers be dismissed by Leicester it would almost certainly end any lingering chance he has of taking over at United.

United are believed to have sounded out Rodgers about replacing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer while the Norwegian was still in charge but Rodgers bristled whenever it was brought up during press conferences.

Leicester beat United three times in 2021 and their 4-2 victory at the King Power Stadium was the first of four league defeats in Solskjaer's last five games as United manager.

Paris Saint-Germain coach Mauricio Pochettino remains the frontrunner and the popular pick among United players to replace Ralf Rangnick in the summer, with Ajax coach Erik ten Hag also under consideration.
