Recapping Michigan State’s big day on recruiting trail, transfer portal on Wednesday

It was a very busy and successful Wednesday for the Spartans on the recruiting trail and in the transfer portal.

Michigan State picked up a flurry of commitments on Wednesday, both via the 2023 recruiting class and transfer portal. The Spartans ended the day with four new commitments to help quiet some critics on Michigan State’s recent recruiting struggles.

Let’s take a look back at the day and all of the new faces Michigan State will be welcoming to the program:

Aziah Johnson (ATH / WR)

Michigan State got the busy Wednesday going by picking up a commitment from three-star wide receiver Aziah Johnson. Johnson — who hails from Richmond, Va. — is ranked as the No. 28 prospect from the state of Virginia and No. 80 athlete in 247Sports’ composite rankings for the 2023 class.

The Spartans beat out Virginia Tech, South Carolina, Duke and North Carolina for Johnson’s commitment.

Jaelon Barbarin (RB)

The next commit to pop for the Spartans was three-star California running back Jaelon Barbarin. He announced his commitment to Michigan State only a few hours after Johnson to add to the Spartans’ 2023 class.

Barbarin — who is known for his elite breakout speed — picked Michigan State over a handful of power five programs, including Washington State and Kansas State. Barbarin ranks as the No. 93 athlete in 247Sports’ composite rankings for the 2023 class.

Semar Melvin (CB)

Next up to commit to the Spartans on Wednesday was Wisconsin transfer cornerback Semar Melvin. He spent the past four seasons playing for the Badgers.

Melvin recorded 15 tackles and 3 pass defends in his career with the Badgers. He will be a great addition to the depth in Michigan State’s secondary going into the 2023 season.

Jonathan Kim (K)

The recruiting and transfer portal fireworks ended on Wednesday evening with one final bang — former North Carolina Tar Heels kicker Jonathan Kim.

Kim was a kickoff specialist this past season for the Tar Heels and is reportedly looking to get an opportunity at place kicking. In his career at North Carolina, he was three-for-three in extra points and missed his only field goal attempt.
