Rebel Wilson addresses 5 stone weight loss and says dramatic weight gain was due to PCOS

Rebel Wilson has revealed that she chose the comedy acting route after her PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) caused dramatic weight gain before she hit her twenties.

The newly-svelte star also explained how she thinks her weight meant that a comedic career was on the cards, and something that she believes stopped her from playing different roles.

The 41-year-old Australian actress, who recently lost a whopping 5.5 stone, has opened up on why she decided to take on roles such like her iconic portrayal of Fat Amy in Pitch Perfect on the Life Uncut Podcast.

Speaking to the host of the podcast, Rebel opened up about how she was a 'normal size' when she was younger, but in her twenties she piled on the pounds after being diagnosed with PCOS.

The actress detailed: "Being bigger I was kind of the normal size, maybe more on the athletic side when I was a teenager...

"And then I had something called polycystic ovary syndrome [PCOS] and one of the side effects is that you can gain weight rapidly when you're 20/21."

She continued: "So obviously I knew I was a bigger girl so I was like you just got to embrace it so that's why I went into comedy acting because I knew how much power comedians can have, people are more likely to laugh at people they don't want to have sex with."

Rebel then explained how most comedians "often have something physical about them that's abnormal" – hence why they take up comedy.

"Those people tend to go better in comedy," she said, "so I turned what was turned into a lot of agents as a disadvantage into my advantage."

Rebel then spoke about wanting and choosing to play the role of Pitch Perfect's Fat Amy, and how she opted to do so because she was the funniest character in the franchise.

The star who has shed more than five stone explained how she weighed "three times more" than the rest of the cast on the set of Pitch Perfect.

Speaking on the podcast she said: "I just loved being Fat Amy. And I just loved being that character, it is interesting how people get into comedy and stuff."

The star also touched on fashion as a fat person, explaining that it was never really an issue for her, she then explained: "but I know a lot of women have struggled. A lot of girls who are normal size are told they're fat and shamed."

Rebel then revealed something that she realised: "Being bigger I didn't have any serious disease but I knew secretly my emotional eating was unhealthy.

"That is not healthy way to deal with emotions. I know deep down I can't keep doing that, like I can’t, I've got have a healthy option for my life.

"I'm travelling around the world having this amazing life, having a great career, just wanted to be in one Hollywood movie and now I've done 20."

The Australian star then spoke about embarking on her 'year of health' in 2020, detailing how she thought: "I'm turning 40 I knew I can be healthier... I'm gonna make the big change and lose the excess weight, I had a lot of push-back from that."
