Olympic gold medallist Rebecca Adlington has opened up about suffering a miscarriage, which resulted in emergency surgery and a health battle with sepsis and a kidney infection. Rebecca, 33, opened up to fans on her Instagram as she shared a photo of herself in a hospital bed holding a cup of tea with an IV line visible in her hand as she thanked staff and her loved-ones for their support.
She said her husband Andy Parsons had been her 'rock'.
The retired swimming legend found out she had lost her baby after going to hospital for her 12 week scan with her husband. She told fans that she's 'slowly on the mend' but has a 'long way to go'.
She told her followers : "On Tuesday me and Andy went to hospital for our 12 week scan only to discover we’ve had a miscarriage which resulted in emergency surgery.

"I managed to leave hospital Thursday only to be readmitted Friday. After a day of treating sepsis, a kidney infection and a fever I’m slowly on the mend. Long way to go but I’m in the right place."
She continued: "It’s such a devastating time but important in times like these we remember we aren’t alone and have so much support. @andrewparsons5 you have been my rock this week. Same with family and friends.
"We haven’t managed to process it all yet but I know with their support we’ll get through it. Once I’m able to leave hospital I’m extremely grateful I get to go home and give my two little ones the best hugs!"
Rebecca and Andy have an 18-month-old son Albie and the swimmer also has seven-year-old daughter Summer with her ex-husband Harry Needs. She and Andy tied the knot a year ago at Scarlet Hall in Cheshire.
Rebecca, who wore a bespoke dress by Manchester-based designer Zeynep Kartal, was walked down the aisle by her father Steve, accompanied by Summer who served as both flower girl and ring-bearer at the romantic ceremony. And the groom was moved to tears as Rebecca sprang a surprise.
Tom Odell’s tear-jerking song Grow Old With Me played as the bride entered the room. After exchanging their own vows, the couple hosted a reception for 80 guests, including Team GB swimming coach Bill Furniss, former competitive swimmers Stephen Parry, Caitlin McClatchey and Fran Halsall and her husband former England rugby player Jon Wilkin.
The couple met through the Bumble dating app in January 2018. Rebecca won two gold medals at the Beijing Olympics in 2008 and two bronzes at London 2012.
