'Really sensible deal' - Liverpool told to sign £51m Newcastle target in summer transfer window

Glen Johnson has urged his former club Liverpool to make a move for Italy and Juventus forward Federico Chiesa this summer.

Chiesa was an instrumental part of the Italy side that won Euro 2020. But he has struggled for form after being hampered with injuries in recent years and spent over six months on the sidelines with an ACL injury in 2022.

However, despite those setbacks, and despite scoring just two goals in Serie A last season, Johnson believes the 25-year-old, who has been heavily linked with a move to Newcastle United, would be a welcome addition at Anfield this summer.

“He’s a good player that plays for a huge club and has had success at international level," Johnson told Betfred. "He’s not just been a member of the squad, but he’s performed when he’s had to and I believe it could be a really sensible deal for Liverpool if they can get him, if they don’t have to break the bank for him.

“I think he’s a player that would improve Liverpool’s squad and if they can sign him for a reasonable fee, then that’s a transfer I’d really like to see happen.”

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp is set to have a plethora of options in attack next term after Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota spent large parts of the 2022/23 campaign on the sidelines. Liverpool's fortunes should also be boosted by the continued acclimatisation of Darwin Nunez, who returned a respectable 15 goals during an at times difficult debut first year on Merseyside.

Away from the glare of the Premier League, the Reds will hope to be able to offer youngsters Ben Doak and potentially Kaide Gordon game time during the early rounds of the League Cup and Europa League before the turn of the year, too.

Chiesa, who turned his loan deal at Juventus permanent in the summer of 2022, has two years remaining on his contract with the Turin giants and is reportedly rated as worth £51m.
