Real life terror plot behind new ITV Stephen Graham drama The Walk-In

New ITV drama The Walk-In is based on a real life plot to murder a West Lancashire MP.

The series stars Merseyside actor Stephen Graham, who plays activist Matthew Collins, a reformed Neo-Nazi, now working as a bona fide journalist for the anti-racist organisation, Hope not Hate. Forced to flee the UK and go into hiding in the 1990’s when he became a mole from within the BNP, Collins returned to Britain to make a new life for himself.

The Walk-In focuses upon Collins and his work to stop the radicalisation of young white men before it begins. Part of the storyline features a dramatization of the plot to murder West Lancashire Labour MP Rosie Cooper.

The plan was formed in 2017 by Jack Renshaw, from Skelmersdale, who is now serving a life sentence for his involvement in terrorist activities with the far right group National Action. Also depicted in the show is Matthew Hankinson, from Newton-le-Willows.

Hankinson is currently serving a six year sentence for his involvement in the Neo-Nazi group, alongside Renshaw. Handed the heaviest sentence of the group, Renshaw admitted terrorist activities on trial at the Old Bailey as well as buying a machete, which he intended to use to murder the MP as well as a female police officer.

Christopher Lythgoe, 32, from Warrington, who was believed to be the leader of National Action, was jailed for eight years in July 2018 after he was found guilty of being a member of the fascist group.

Two parts of the ITV drama have already aired. There are five episodes in total, each airing over consecutive Mondays on ITV, with the third on October 17, the fourth on October 24 and the final one on October 31.

A synopsis of part three reads: "Mullen comes under suspicion within National Action, but he refuses the offer of a new life and a new identity on the witness protection programme. He wants to walk away from everything, but without his evidence those planning the murder of Rosie Cooper MP may escape justice. Activist Matthew Collins is forced to take Mullen into his own home to keep him safe."
