Real Life of ITV Corrie's Bernie Winter actress Jane Hazelgrove married to an EastEnders and Emmerdale star

Coronation Street star Jane Hazelgrove burst onto the famous cobbles as gobby Bernie Winter in 2019 and went on to become a firm favourite with TV fans. In the soap she has been a force to be reckoned with as the straight-talking mum of Gemma and Paul Foreman.

Jane's Coronation Street character was described as "an old raver who still sees herself as a free spirit. She is not one to be tied down to a man, a job or any responsibilities, especially when it means hard work for her." An early storyline saw her steal her pregnant daughter’s urine to sell fake positive pregnancy tests.

But, after settling into the street, she's revealed herself to have a big heart who would fight tooth and and nail for her loved ones. Bernie, who has a new comedy storyline which sees her roped into a dodgy money-making scheme after meeting her doppelganger Fern played by Gabrielle Glaister, has failed to find romance on the cobbles despite a brief dalliance with Dev Alahan.

But in real-life the Manchester actress, 54, has been married to fellow soap actor Isobel Middleton since 2015. Speaking on the show Lorraine in 2019 she opened up about her ‘beautiful’ wife. She joked: “We’ve not [worked alongside each other], which is probably why we’re still together. She’s sensational, a really beautiful woman. I am very blessed.

“We relocated back to Manchester last year, before [Corrie]. It was time to get back to the north for all kinds of reasons and that makes me very happy.”

Isobel had three roles in Emmerdale as Dr Lane in 2014, a prosecution barrister during Simon McManus's trial in 2018 and Jean Rawson in 2020. And in the BBC soap EastEnders she played Sadie Banks in 2002.

In May she tweeted proudly about her love ahead of The British Soap Awards: "Very proud that my sublimely talented & hilarious wife has been nominated for Best Comedy Performance at the #soapawards2022 We can’t vote but if I could I would. Repeatedly. #JaneHazlegrove #BernieWinters #Corrie #funnybones."

Before playing Bernie, Jane played Sue Clayton in Corrie back in 1985, the youngest daughter of Harry and Connie Clayton. She is also known for playing paramedic Kathleen 'Dixie' Dixon in the BBC medical drama Casualty.

She also played Rosie in Making Out, Rosemary Mason in Silent Witness, Yvonne Bradley in London's Burning and had roles in Jonathan Creek, The Bill, Doctors, Families, Lovejoy and Holby City. Despite her fame in 2019 she revealed hr battle with 'Imposter Syndrome.'

She told chat show host Lorraine Kelly: “It is quite difficult when I pop up. I tend to throw things at the television. I am quite hard on myself. I think that’s important though don’t you? Imposter syndrome - that at any moment I could say, are you Jane Hazelgrove? Yeah, get out.”

Jane said: “The arrogance of youth - I wasn’t nervous at all then. Now I’m a woman in my 50s, it was really frightening, because it’s Coronation Street. It’s a big gig and I don’t want to let the show down and I don’t want to let myself down or the family or anything.”

On landing the role as the colourful Bernie, she said: “I’m thrilled to be joining Coronation Street. It’s where I started my apprenticeship as a very young actor. I can’t wait to get stuck in”.
