Nottinghamshire Live readers have voiced their sadness after it was announced that this year's Nottingham Bonfire Night event has been cancelled. Nottingham City Council said the annual bonfire night and firework display at the Forest Recreation Ground is off due to budget pressures.
Organised in partnership with the Mellors Group, it was due to take place on Saturday, November 5. The event usually attracts a 40,000 strong crowd. Had it gone ahead, it would have been the first time in three years it had been held, after the event had to be cancelled during the Covid pandemic.
However, like many councils around the country, the city council said it is facing huge budget difficulties which it says have been exacerbated by rising inflation, energy costs and other pressures. Councils in Manchester, Dundee, Cardiff, Liverpool, Leeds, Glasgow, Norwich and Hackney have all announced decisions to cancel bonfire night events this year.

Yet, the decision to cancel the event was met with frustration, with one reader commenting that they were "gutted" by the decision.
Taking to Facebook, one reader exclaimed: "So gutted my eldest loves the fire works and bonfire and its always been such a great atmosphere." Another said: "That's dreadful."
Others are concerned about the dangers of people hosting their own firework displays. One reader posted: "Cue more idiots buying and setting off fireworks putting people and animals in harms way."
Another said: "So we now have the dangerous situation where everyone does fireworks in their gardens. And also our animals are even more scared out of their skins. Fabulous!"
Another wrote: "But we had 10 days of Goose Fair..."
Other events are still going ahead in Nottingham, including this year’s Winter Wonderland attraction which is staged by the Mellors Group at no cost to local taxpayers.
