Readers back Nottinghamshire Live calls for action at Nottingham City Council

Readers have backed calls from the Nottingham Post / Nottinghamshire Live for action over Nottingham City Council's financial mismanagement. Following the collapse of Robin Hood Energy in 2020, and the burden on the tax payer, it emerged before Christmas that the city council had unlawfully spent more than £15m on the wrong services.

However, investigations suggest millions more could also have been misspent. So the Post / Nottinghamshire live called for accountability.

On the Nottinghamshire Live Facebook page, readers left comments explaining what they thought to the call for action. Kal Kandola said: “The council should be run like a business and not a political playground, which it is.

"The whole system needs to be overhauled.” Lesley Garton added: “All this will eventually cost the general public. The government reducing their allowance to councils hasn't helped.

"A lot of councils will have had to hike up council tax. The whole system needs a big shake-up.” Angie Ball said: "Loads of ring-fenced monies used by NCC to fund things other than its purpose. Look into children's services, too."

But Brian Rockett said: "Just for context... How much has has central government cut the council's budget in the last decade? Something like £150 million."

Jason King added: “I read the comments and the views would suggest Labour are incompetent but I also see comments saying the Conservatives would be just as bad if elected. Perhaps the system is wrong and outdated. could there be another way? Just a thought.”
