Ravindra Jadeja fined for applying soothing cream without umpires' consent

NEW DELHI: Star India all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja was on Saturday fined 25 per cent of his match fee for applying the soothing cream without on-field umpires' permission during the first Test against Australia in Nagpur.

The all-rounder was found in breach of Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct and has also been handed one demerit point.

The incident happened on the opening day of the first Test when Jadeja, during the 46th over of Australia’s first innings was seen applying a soothing cream to his index finger.

Viral videos on social media showed the 34-year-old taking a substance from Mohammed Siraj's palm and appeared to rub this onto his left hand finger.

This is Jadeja’s first offence in a 24-month period and the one demerit point has been added to his disciplinary record.

The India team management later had explained that Jadeja was applying the cream to a swelling on the index finger of his bowling hand.

The southpaw admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by match referee Andy Pycroft.
