Here’s a new opportunity for a former New Orleans Saints quarterback. The Baltimore Ravens re-signed free agent Brett Hundley after an injury to Lamar Jackson left them with just Tyler Huntley on their 53-man roster; Hundley will join the practice squad. He spent time with Baltimore over the summer, giving him some familiarity with their playbook.
Hundley recently saw work as Jackson’s proxy on the Saints scout team; while they may have had the right idea, New Orleans didn’t achieve the desired results. Jackson went 12-of-22 for 133 passing yards and a touchdown while gaining 82 rushing yards on 11 attempts, though the Saints defense did come away with 3 sacks. Speaking of Jackson, Ravens head coach John Harbaugh said Sunday that this isn’t a season-ending knee injury, and they’re optimistic he can return in a matter of days or weeks.
Baltimore has a narrow lead on the AFC North title race at 8-4, so this is a big opportunity for Tyler Huntley to lead them down the stretch. Four of the Raven’s five remaining games will be against division rivals, including a regular season finale with the Cincinnati Bengals on the road (who are also 8-4 right now). Huntley will be a restricted free agent in 2023, meaning Baltimore will have some options in retaining him, but this is a real audition for him with quarterback-needy teams like the Saints watching. If Jackson misses extensive time, it’ll be Huntley filling in for him and Hundley backing him up.
