Ravenhill Road cycle lane improvement design work underway

Design work is underway to complete cycle lanes along a major Belfast road.

The move will see a Department for Infrastructure ‘partner’ look at ways to improve cycle lanes along the Ravenhill Road in South and East Belfast.

News of the development emerged in a letter from the Department’s Permanent Secretary to local SDLP councillor Séamas de Faoite. The letter outlines how work is underway to “design a scheme for the Ravenhill Road”, adding that the scheme will consider “junction enhancements and [an] additional pedestrian crossing”.

Cllr de Faoite said: “I welcome the Permanent Secretary’s response to me, that work has commenced on designing the Ravenhill Road segregated cycle infrastructure, continuing the work the SDLP began in Government when it published the Belfast Cycle Network Delivery Plan.

“It is important that this welcomed work includes the necessary safety measures to promote active travel in our area, which is why the SDLP and I will continue to campaign for a new set of crossings at Ardenlee Avenue as part of this scheme.

“The completion of this cycle lane, along with the much awaited bridge connecting Ormeau Park and the Gasworks will open up more space in our area for people to enjoy safely.”

A Departmental spokesperson said: “The Ravenhill Road was identified as a route for enhanced cycling infrastructure in the Belfast Cycle Network Delivery Plan (BCNDP), published 23 March 2022. The Department has now engaged our consultant partner to commence design of the scheme which will consider the entire length of the Ravenhill Road, and where appropriate, linkage to existing cycling infrastructure.

“Options for junction enhancements and additional pedestrian crossings will be considered during the design.”
