A rare book collection of Geoffrey Bond OBE, will be offered for sale by Golding Young & Mawer Lincoln and is expected to reach over £100,000 when it goes up for auction on Wednesday April 27. The collection, which has already been online for a week, has raised considerable interest among Nottingham collectors.

The auctioneers have reached out to local libraries and other venues in the hopes that the valuable collection from the 18th and 19th century, could be displayed publicly. The collection has several valuable editions including

One of the most valuable books was published by S & J Ridge in 1792 written by Captain George Cartwright, and titled 'A Journal of Transactions and Events During a Residency of Nearly 16 Years on the Coast of Labrador'. The rare collection of books also includes prints of Nottinghamshire from the 18th and 19th Century (Golding Young & Mawer)

Other notable Newark authors represented in the sale from the 19th Century include William Dickinson and R.P Shilton. The sale will also include one entitled ‘Newark as a Publishing Town’ 1898 by Thomas Matthews Blagg of Brusnell Hall, Car Colston, Nottinghamshire, a distinguished local historian.

Mr Bond, who was originally born in Newark and has lived between London and Nottingham throughout his life, devoted one of his collections to the County - in particular Newark-on-Trent. He decided to downsize his collection and has brought the books to Golding Young & Mawer auctioneers in Lincoln.

Lincoln Head of Department, Mr John Leatt said it is a 'wonderful collection' of books that are in fantastic condition and that the collection has been really well looked after.'

He said: "We are selling the collection on behalf of Geoffry Bond who has been a collector in the Nottinghamshire area for all of his life. We are expecting it to reach in excess of £100,000 overall for the collection."

He added: "There has been a lot of interest in particular from local collectors as there is a good selection of publications from Newark in particular. This is quite unusual and there are a lot of collectors around the Newark area that are keen to add to what they have. There has been a lot of local interest over the week that the books have been on sale and we are expecting even more interest in the coming weeks."

Mr Bond said: “This sale is a rare opportunity to buy volumes that do not come onto the market very frequently and sad though I am to part with the volumes after so many years, I hope this sale will give pleasure to new purchasers and spawn new collections.”

A number of other Nottingham authors will be included in the sale such as the famous work of Dr Robert Thoroton, ‘The Antiquities of Nottinghamshire’ 1677. A similar volume, but later in time is, ‘The History of Nottinghamshire’ by John Throsby 1790 and Charles Deering ‘History of Nottinghamshire’ 1751, which is being sold with the exceptionally rare index to this book created by R C Chicken in 1899.

There is also Robert Lowe’s ‘General View of the Agriculture of Nottinghamshire’ 1898, ‘The Annals of Newark’ by Cornelius Brown 1879. Other authors include J. Potter – Briscoe, William Stretton, James Orange, and Robert Mellors.
