Rare images of The Beatles playing at Liverpool’s Cavern Club discovered

Rare images have emerged of The Beatles playing at The Cavern Club in Liverpool in July 1961. They were taken over a year before the band's debut single, Love Me Do, was released.

The pictures show a young John Lennon and Sir Paul McCartney at the microphone, with George Harrison on guitar. The group’s original drummer, Pete Best - later replaced by Ringo Starr - can also be partially seen in the background.

Beatles historian and author Mark Lewisohn said the photos are "previously unseen" and that "no other photos show them dressed this way". Mark explained: “Set inside Liverpool’s cramped and dank Cavern Club, these previously unseen photos capture The Beatles playing for a lunchtime or evening audience in July 1961.
