A rare 50p coin has been auctioned off for £179 after a 28-way bidding war on eBay.
The commemorative Kew Gardens 50p coin is a limited edition piece released in 2009. The Royal Mint estimates about 210,000 pieces were made and the piece of change is understood to be worth around £140.
A recent sale saw the piece of change sold for 358 times its face value. According to the listing reported by the Echo, the final sale price came to £179, notwithstanding £6.85 for express delivery.
According to its online listing, the "Rare 100% Genuine 2009 Kew Gardens 50p Coin In Excellent Circulated Condition" had a starting price of 99p before a competitive bidding war drove up the final price.
If you're hoping to be as lucky as this seller, the first thing you should do is check the date on any Kew Gardens coin you find. The piece was released to mark 250 years since Kew Gardens opened in 1759 in 2009, but the Royal Mint reissued it in 2019 and that version is less valuable to collectors.
But you could still be in for an exciting payday if you find one of these, as they can sell for between £70 and £80 on eBay.
