Rare 50p coin sells for hundreds again with thousands more in circulation

An unusual 50p coin has sold for almost 270 times its face value on eBay, with thousands more still in circulation.

The winning bid for the coin was an an impressive £135, after other bidders fought to bag the rare 50 pence piece.

In 2009, the coin was released to mark 250 years since Kew Gardens opened in 1759.

The Royal Mint estimate that a total of 210,000 coins were ever made, making it a rare find.

The coin features the famous Chinese Pagoda at the Royal Botanic Garden on the tails side with the Queen's face as standard on the heads side, reports the Liverpool Echo.

This is not the first time this coin has sold for such a large value.

While rare, this coin regularly fetches a high price on the auction site.

Change checking website Coin Hunter puts the average resale price for the Kew Gardens 50p between £150.89 and £161.50, meaning this coin has sold just below the price range.

The "Kew Gardens 50p 2009 rare circulated fifty pence coin" listing on eBay had a starting price of £50.

After a tense 19-way bidding war, it was finally sold for £134.89.

Change checking website Coin Hunter puts the average price range for the Kew Gardens 50p being sold between £150.89 and £161.50, meaning that this particular coin has sold for a below average price.

However, there have also been examples of this coin selling for as much as £200 in the past.

If you find a Kew Gardens 50p in your change soon, the first thing you should do is check the date on it.

This is because the Royal Mint reissued a batch of the coins in 2019 to celebrate 50 years of the 50p - and this version doesn’t tend to sell for as much.

But you could still be in for an exciting payday if you find one of these, as they can sell for between £70 and £80 on eBay.
