A very rare 50p coin has sold on eBay for an incredible £790 after a bidding war. The coin features the Gruffalo from the children's book from 2019.
The coin was minted in 22-carat gold and only 600 of the limited edition coins were produced. Royal Mint lists the coin for £1,020 on its website. The coin is not currently in stock.
Last week, one eBay seller received £790 for theirs after the listing started a 30-way bidding war. The item was listed as "The Gruffalo 2019 UK 50p Gold Proof Coin Very Rare Limited 600 ONLY MADE…MINT".
From a starting price of just £0.99, bids jumped quickly. The coin was sold for 1580 times its face value.
It's always worth checking your change for some of the rarest coins in circulation across the UK. Earlier this month, one lucky person sold a rare 50p coin for £175.
The coin was released in 2009 to mark 250 years since Kew Gardens opened in 1759 and the Royal Mint estimated around 210,000 were made. It features the famous Chinese Pagoda at the Royal Botanic Garden on the tail side with the Queen's face as normal on the other.
If you find a Kew Gardens 50p in your change, the first thing you should do is check the date. This is because the Royal Mint reissued a batch of the coins in 2019 to celebrate 50 years of the 50p - and this version is not worth as much.
But you could still be in for an exciting payday if you find one of these, as they can sell for between £70 and £80 on eBay.
