People across Edinburgh are being urged to check their change after a rare 50p sold for more than 270 times its face value.
After a bidding war online, the coin released in 2009 sold for £140 earlier this month. Coins are a popular collectors item, with many selling on for lots more than many may expect.
Released to celebrate 250 since Kew Gardens opened in 1759, the Royal Mint estimates that there were around 21,000 made and released back in 2009. The coin features the famous Chinese Pagoda at the Royal Botanic Garden on the tails side with the Queen's face as normal on the other, reports the Echo.

Listed on eBay, the description explains that the coin is the "FANTASTIC KEW GARDENS EXTREMELY RARE 2009 50p COIN Q.E.II"
The coin was listed on auction, with a starting price of just £1. However, after a 22-year bidding war, the price quickly jumped to £137.
The Royal Mint suggests that the coin is worth £140, meaning the seller bagged just about the right price for the collectors item.
With coin listings hugely popular online, it is worth checking your change to see if you have a Kew Gardens coin or any other rare 50p coin often a hit with shoppers.
If you spot a Kew Gardens 50p coin in your change you should check the date before getting excited. The Royal Mint reissued a batch of the coins in 2019 to celebrate 50 years of the 50p, and unfortunately this version does not sell for as much.
You could still cash in for a decent amount those, with the newer versions selling for between £70 and £80 on eBay.
