One lucky coin collector in Scotland has received a fortune after listing a rare 50p coin on eBay and fetching a huge £100,000 for it.
The Battle of Hastings 50p coin was listed on eBay by a seller in Falkirk, and is one of 6.7 million that are currently in circulation. After receiving just one bid, the seller cashed in the huge sum of money on December 11, 2022.
While it's not clear whether the coin had entered circulation - which can decrease the value - photos supplied on the online marketplace show scratches and signs of wear.
According to specialists at coin pricing site Coinhunter, this type of 50p typically fetches between £1.23 and £1.74 when it's sold on eBay. Other Battle of Hastings 50p coins are currently listed on eBay at prices ranging from 49p to a staggering £749,250.
The coins were struck for circulation back in 2016 to mark 950 years since the famous battle between King Harold II of England and William the Conqueror in 1066. Designed by John Bergdahl, the coin is inspired by the Bayeux Tapestry which displays the famous war scene.
The back of the coin features the drawing of King Harold with an arrow through his eye during the battle which is thought by experts to have changed the course of history.
It comes as a rare Brexit coin was auctioned off on eBay by a Glasgow seller for £10,000 last week. This 50p coin sold on February 6, with the seller describing it as 'very rare'.
Officially called the Withdrawal from the EU coin, the back of the 50p piece reads: "Peace, prosperity and friendship with all nations" and marks the official Brexit date of January 31, 2020.
The Battle of Hastings coin currently ranks in 53rd place of the most rare 50p coins, according to Change Checker's latest scarcity index released in November 2022. Meanwhile the Brexit 50p is currently sitting at 70th place on Change Checker's scarcity index.
Although it reportedly sold for a huge fortune, the Battle of Hastings 50p is nowhere near the rarest coin in the UK right now.
The Kew Gardens 50p tops the list of the highest-value coins of that amount. It was designed back in 2009 to mark the 250th anniversary of the botanical gardens, which can be found in Richmond, London. Only 210,000 coins with this design were ever minted.
The coin depicts an image of the famous Chinese pagoda on one side. It sells for an average of £156.25 on eBay, but has been known to sell for up to £215.
The Royal Mint, the official coin maker of British coins, often produces limited edition coins which can fetch for many times their face value.
