A commemorative £2 coin produced for the 1996 Football European Championships is so rare that one recently sold on eBay for more than 400 times its value.
Fewer than 2,100 of the coins were made to commemorate the Euros, making the coins highly sought after. The coin sports a football pattern, with 1996 engraved in the middle surrounded by 16 small circles representing the countries that took part in the tournament.
While there is a regular base-metal version of the coin that typically sells for between £5 and £7, the gold-proof version is much more valuable in the eyes of avid coin collectors. According to The Coin Expert, these £2 coins are worth around £1,000 - 500 times their face value.
