Rapper shares incredible Welsh-language drill music clip

A young rapper has taken social media by storm with a video of drill music in the Welsh language.

Toda Ogunbanwo, who is a 22-year-old student from Penygroes in Gwynedd, shared a video on Twitter last week of him rapping both in English and Welsh.

So far, the video has reached over 185,000 views and received over seven thousand likes.

On Twitter, the artist who performs under the name Sage Todz, described the reaction as "crazy".

He added: "Thank you everyone for showing love on my Welsh Drill post."

"I didn't think it would blow to this extent."

Drill is a branch of rap music and is often compared to trap music, which is a subgenre of hip hop.

When speaking to BBC Cymru Fyw, Toda explained that he used music as a way of dealing with his feelings towards racism he had faced during his upbringing in a "healthy" way.

Toda and his family moved from Essex to Penygroes in 2007. According to the musician, he had to "learn quickly" from a young age.

In June of 2020, Toda and his family woke up to find a swastika sign graffitied on their garage door.

"It was disgusting that someone was trying to make us scared like that," he told BBC Cymru Fyw.

"It was the feather than broke the camel’s back. I’ve had worse and much more personal things happen to me up to now.

"Throughout my childhood I’ve faced challenges and struggles. I’ve experienced things that aren't great for a child to have to deal with."

Toda also added he had a "lot to look forward to", and was planning on producing more music in Welsh.

During the interview, he added: "There's a higher demand now for a Welsh version of that video so I'll do my best to get that completed in the next coming weeks.

"I've wanted to release something in Welsh for some time now."
