Rapist used hidden camera to take intimate photos of woman before selling them online

A rapist used a hidden camera to take intimate photos of a woman before selling them online.

Kriss Sawyer, 31, had sex with the victim when she was too drunk to consent, and took photos and videos without her knowledge.

The 31-year-old, who also sexually assaulted the woman with sex toys, then sold the footage for up to £800.

He was jailed for 10 and a half years at Preston Crown Court on Wednesday (December 21) after pleading guilty to three counts of rape, four counts of sexual assault and possession of an indecent image.

The court heard that during one incident, on Christmas Day, the victim was so drunk she had to be carried to bed. But that did not stop Sawyer having sex with her, while she repeatedly told him 'no', Lancs Live reports.

Paul Cummings, prosecuting, said: "The following day she texted him and told him what he had done amounted to rape. He said he didn't deny it but it wasn't a big deal."

Mr Cummings said the woman occasionally consented to Sawyer taking intimate photographs, but never agreed that they could be shared, and did not consent to all the images which were later found on Sawyer's digital devices. Many of them had been taken using a hidden camera.

In March 2021, the woman found sexual photographs of herself online. She reported Sawyer to the police and his devices were seized.

"It was clear the defendant had been placing adverts to sell some of the material", Mr Cummings said. Sawyer was arrested and told officers he could not remember whether the woman had consented, but he remembered having sex with her when she was sleepy or groggy through alcohol. He admitted selling some of the images as he was struggling financially with debts - including £200 he owed to a sex chatline.

Bravely facing her abuser in court, Sawyer's victim read a statement describing how she had been affected by his abuse. She said: "What he did has had a huge impact on me. I have been having panic attacks and anxiety and struggling to cope with things at home.

"I have nightmares and wake up thinking Kriss is still doing things while I am asleep. I did see Kriss while I was out shopping and I ended up having a panic attack and leaving the shop. The whole situation came flooding back."

Beverley Hackett, defending, said Sawyer pleaded guilty to the offences and now has 'an indelible label' hanging over him. He has lost his job and brought shame upon his family. Sentencing, Judge Simon Medland KC said: "Your victim was vulnerable because she was under the influence of alcohol. The breach of trust is utterly appalling.

"Perhaps almost worse of all is the single aggravating feature is that, not satisfied with abusing your victim, you sought to gain financially by offering films of her in compromising positions, and pictures of her to receive payment. It is absolutely abundantly clear to me that your appalling sexual abuse has had, and will have for many years to come, a truly detrimental effect on her."

He sentenced Sawyer, of Derek Road, Whittle-le-Woods, Lancashire, to seven years concurrent for each of the rapes, with a further three and half years for the sexual assaults. He also handed down 27 months for another sexual assault and three months to run concurrently for possession of an indecent image which was found on a USB stick.
