Raphael Varane's below par debut season at Manchester United has been highlighted by Darren Bent, who claims he "got away with it" due to the struggles of centre-half partner Harry Maguire.
The Frenchman moved to Old Trafford from Real Madrid for £41m last summer, being unveiled on the opening day of the season. Varane arrived as a four-time Champions League winner and was tipped to be a hugely influential figure, but instead he failed to hit the heights expected.
Varane struggled, just like his team, and he was unable to halt their demise. But his difficulties were topped by Maguire, who endured major lulls last term as his form - and his role - were called into question. That said, Bent has called out the World Cup winner.
