Rape charges dropped against Townsville former doctor accused of assaulting patient

Prosecutors have discontinued pursing charges against Mr Kumar. (ABC North Queensland: Mia Knight)

Prosecutors have dropped all charges against a former doctor accused of raping a woman who was his patient in Townsville.

Praveen Kumar was facing seven charges of rape.

It was alleged he raped a woman who was his patient between 2016 and 2017.

Prosecutors have now dropped all charges against the former doctor.

Mr Kumar, 57, had pleaded not guilty to seven charges of rape in a trial in the District Court in Townsville in February.

It was ruled a mistrial on its second day and was due to re-commence on February 24.

But the charges were dropped by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP).

"The matter was discontinued on 24 February, 2023 in the District Court in Townsville, after careful consideration of the evidence," the ODPP said in a statement.

Prosecutors had alleged Mr Kumar met the woman while she was his patient when he was working as a general practitioner at My Family Doctors in Townsville in July 2014.

There are no findings against him.
