Rangers wind up merchant sparks Celtic barrage as punters fume over Champions League barb – Hotline

Hotline regular George Wilson has put more than a few noses out of joint with his assessment of Celtic's chances in this season's Champions League. Cue a barrage of calls to take issue with his remarks and there were a few compliments for Dundee United's Euro win over AZ Alkmaar.

Michael Edmunds, Northampton, said: "Mr Wilson says he’s got the “comedy Celtic in Europe road show” to look forward to, that would be the Champions League of course that Celtic go straight into because we won the league. We won it by winning more games, winning more points, scoring more goals, conceding fewer goals than his team who have to go through the qualifier. To top it off we have Cameron Carter-Vickers, the best centre half in the Premiership, some carthorse Mr Wilson."

Charles Buchanan emailed: "Why do the Rangers fans on the Hotline keep going on about Celtic's performances in Europe? Do they not remember last season they fell at the first hurdle against Malmo in the Champions League qualifier and then dropped into the Europa League and scraped through 1-0 over two rounds against little known Alashkert."

Andy Logan, emailed: "Some obsessed Celtic fans appear to have kicked every ball on Tuesday night George but I’ve a million and one better things to be doing rather than watch the second best team in the country. BT Sport indirectly pays some of the money to teams in the Champions League through their agreement to screen games so on behalf of Celtic FC would like to thank you for your financial support over the years."

Patrick Cunningham, Denny, said: "I have to laugh at the obsessed Rangers fans talking about obsessed Celtic fans talking about Rangers. It's just another day on the Hotline.

"When Celtic collect £40 million for simply being the "diddy team" in the Champions League, I'll be sitting in the stands of Paradise and thinking back to when Rangers were humiliated by the diddy team of the Champions League qualifiers and realising it could be worse."

Eddie Easson Ballingry, said: "The West Sussex Scribe returns with his usual misinformation. Most football supporters watch all games, not just their own teams. If you follow him on here, he never misses a Celtic game.

"He takes great pleasure in naming and slaughtering players, a typical keyboard warrior. If he is looking for a carthorse, look no further than the Rangers stable."

Alfie Mullin, London, said: "I see Celtic are in pot four of the Champions League draw. I think there should be another pot for teams like Celtic. The Champions League comic relief pot springs to mind."

Stephen Mulhern, Dumbarton, said: "Dundee United gave Scottish football on the European scene some credibility back with a fine victory over AZ Alkmaar. Tony Watt seems to keep his best performances on the European stage and from a selfish point of view it’s so sad that he never fulfilled his true potential in a Celtic shirt."

Chris Lowe, Yoker, said: "I can’t believe referee Kevin Clancy has the gig at Ibrox on Saturday, he should be nowhere near a Rangers match after his performances over the past two years It will also be interesting to see if his apprentice Don Robertson is as card happy with Celtic as he was with Rangers last week as historically the stats prove otherwise Rangers need more than VAR for a level playing field with these two still influencing games for the benefit of one club."

And finally a less generous assessment. Kevin Lord, Drylaw, said: "Do I receive different pictures than what is put out by BBC Scotland? The commentary team would have us believe Dundee United were world beaters. They had one shot on target against AZ who will obliterate them in Holland."

Arrin Geddes, Irvine, said: "What a difference a couple of days make in Scottish football. After Rangers’ feeble performance on Tuesday, we watched Dundee United put in a very impressive display against a top Dutch side. Passion, determination, organisation and no shortage of skill, well done United."
