Rangers transfer roundup as Xavi Simons learns his PSG fate and Mateo Cassierra path cleared

It's transfer season and Rangers are gearing up to clinch their Premiership title back at the first time of asking.

It had seemed as if Gio van Bronckhorst would be facing a full rebuild but contract renewals mean it isn't looking as drastic as it once was.

Connor Goldson has joined Steven Davis in signing up and the bulk of last season's squad are tied up with John Souttar arriving to bolster the defensive options.

There is room for some improvement though and depth in midfield is an area they are lacking.

Xavi Simons is a name we've seen often since rumours of Rangers' interest emerged in January. Back then he was said to have issued an ultimatum to PSG over his future, demanding game-time if he was to pen a new deal.

Well it seems he has been answered as after Fabrizio Romano reported a new deal was close, Nicolo Schirai now reports it is in "the final stages."

That would put paid to any hopes Rangers have of signing him permanently although a loan may still be an option if Van Bronckhorst can convince PSG to send his countryman to work under him in Scotland.

A genuine alternative to Alfredo Morelos and Kemar Roofe is also high on the agenda and Sochi striker Mateo Cassierra is one who has been linked.

He name-dropped Rangers in an interview earlier this week while he also claims River Plate are in for him after an impressive season in Russia.

So far there's no concrete news on an official approach from Ibrox - but a space in the squad has just opened up with Cedric Itten departing for BSC Young Boys yesterday.

With Goldson now signed up and Souttar in the door, Leon Balogun is the next defensive star Rangers will be keen to tie down and it's all been a little quiet on that front.

However he made it clear after the Scottish Cup Final he is keen to stay at Ibrox.

And unless there's a surprise swoop from elsewhere (Michael Beale at QPR, anyone?) it seems likely the 33-year-old will get that wish.

His game-time is likely to be limited though with Souttar set to battle it out with Calvin Bassey for that central defensive spot alongside Goldson.

The Nigerian has been tipped for a huge move down south but he's contracted for the long-term and Rangers are under no pressure to sell.

Throw in the fact he's away on Nigeria duty and getting set for a friendly with Ecuador in the early hours of Friday morning and it's unlikely we'll get any movement on that one in the near future.

Aston Villa have been the most heavily linked club but they just landed Diego Carlos so their need for a new centre-back has cooled for the time being.
