Rangers transfer latest as Light Blues target Liverpool defender as part of Bassey replacement drive

Rangers are said to be plotting a move for Liverpool defender Ben Davies as they prepare to rake in millions from the sale of Calvin Bassey.

The Nigerian international is expected to complete a move to become Dutch champions Ajax's latest left-sided defender in a deal worth around £20 million. Rangers boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst has confirmed at least one player will come in to help fill the void soon to be left by Bassey and Liverpool centre-back Davies could be that man, according to the Sun.

He joined Jurgen Klopp's side in February 2021 but hasn't made a senior appearance at Liverpool after signing as centre-back cover. If it weren't for the Reds' offer, Davies could have been a Celtic player currently after they launched a bid to sign him over 18 months ago while Neil Lennon was still manager and the defender was at Preston. A permanent solution could be sought for a player who has three years left on his Anfield deal and spent last term at Sheffield United.

Van Bronckhorst has seemingly already conceded defeat in hopes of keeping Bassey but insists he's been a pleasure to manager.

He said after Saturday's 2-1 friendly win over Blackpool: “We have only positives to take. I have really enjoyed working with Calvin for six months.

“His development was incredible, how he developed into a central defender and sometimes a left-back. A player like him came from the second team and developed into a top-class defender, and that’s what you want at your club.

“I’m very proud to be part of that, so he will move on to the next level and develop even more. Of course the club will make money financially too.”
