Rangers to honour legendary boss Walter Smith with statue at Copland Road end of Ibrox

Rangers have announced that a statue in honour of Walter Smith to celebrate his achievements at the club has been commissioned.

The legendary manager passed away one year ago today after a battle with illness and the club releasing a video on social media as a tribute in his memory. The football great served as assistant manager, manager and chairman during his trophy-laden stints at Ibrox. He lifted 10 top-flight titles while he also won 11 domestic cup competitions in total with five coming in the Scottish Cup and six in the League Cup.

The new sculpture will take pride of place at the Copland Road end of Ibrox. A club statement read: "On the first anniversary of his passing, Rangers Football Club are today pleased to announce a statue of legendary manager Walter Smith has been commissioned to commemorate his incredible achievements at the club.

"In the modern era, nobody contributed more to Rangers than Walter. He served as assistant manager, manager, and chairman, with his spells as manager yielding an incredible 10 top-flight titles, five Scottish Cups and six League Cups.

"A boyhood supporter who more than lived the dream, future generations will be met with this new sculpture at the famed Copland Road end of Ibrox Stadium."

Rangers fans have expressed their delight at the news on the first anniversary of his sad passing. One wrote: "Best news out of the club for some time."

Another said: "A fitting tribute. Thoughts are with his family today as we remember the great man."

A fellow fan wrote: "No man deserves it more."

A further Rangers supporter added: "Amazing, so happy about this. If anyone deserves it, it's Walter."
