Rangers title winner emerges as 'contender' for key Ibrox role

Former Rangers title winner Lee McCulloch has emerged as a "contender" to fill the vacant technical director spot at Ibrox, according to a new report.

Dan Purdy left the role just a week after the summer transfer window ended, making the position available.

Now, The Scottish Sun reports that McCulloch, currently talent acquisition manager at Brighton, is one of the contenders being considered.

The former midfielder, who secured the league title with Rangers in 2011, has established himself in the recruitment and talent identification sector. His position at Brighton has bolstered his standing in the football scouting and recruitment world.

Rangers are now considering their options to fill the vacancy, with performance director Stig Inge Bjornbye still part of the football operations team.

Purdy, who joined Rangers in June 2025, was part of a significant overhaul of the club's playing squad during his 15-month tenure. He played a role in recruiting 32 players before announcing his departure.

His exit was confirmed by Rangers, who said: "Rangers Football Club confirms that Dan Purdy will step down from his position as technical director. Dan will continue to work with the club's ownership group, supporting the transition and other football projects.

"The board would like to thank Dan for his commitment and contribution during his time at Rangers and wishes him every success for the future."

The club has faced criticism for its recruitment efforts in recent seasons due to the high turnover of players.

During Russell Martin's tenure, 14 players were brought in, followed by four signings in January under Danny Rohl, and another 14 players were added by Derek McInnes this summer.
