Rangers star John Souttar's brother dies as footballer pays tribute to 'hero and best mate'

Rangers star John Souttar's brother has died following a long illness aged 42. Aaron Souttar, who had motor neurone disease, passed away on Sunday, July 17.

John paid tribute to his "brother, hero and best mate" after his family revealed the news of his passing on social media.

His sister Alisa Shand said on Facebook: "On Sunday 17th July, our beautiful Aaron passed away, after a long illness, aged 42. A beloved partner of Paula, adored and proud dad of Hamish, deeply loved son of Jack and Caroline, step-son of Heather and Mark, loved brother of Ailsa, John, Harry and Mhiran."

Aaron's funeral took place at Parkgrove Crematoriumin Friokheim on Thursday. Family and friends then went on to Brechin Golf Club, where talented golfer Aaron was a previous club captain. Before the ceremony, the family said they would welcome donations in aid of My Name’5 Doddie Foundation and MND Scotland.

John dedicated his Scotland goal against Denmark to Aaron back in November. The Ibrox defender, who played for Hearts at the time, had battled back from two career-threatening achilles injuries before scoring a fairytale opener in the match.

He had received a late call-up to the squad as a replacement for Scott McTominay - and after netting in the 2-0 win, he said: “My brother Aaron, he's at home. He couldn't make it tonight but that was for him because he helped me a lot during my rehab, so that was for him."

Following the devastating news tributes to Aaron flooded in. Jillian McEwan said: "Such a huge loss. He'll be greatly missed and definitely not forgotten, especially his wisecracks."

Stuart Lok Lockhart said: "Sad times. Keep the high balls low up there Big Fella. RIP."

Grant Sutherland said: "So sorry to hear. Aaron was an absolute gentleman, thoughts are with you all."

Denis Morrison added: "Such sad news, he was a great guy."

John Souttar, who signed for Rangers from Hearts in the summer, made his league debut in the 2-1 win against Livingston on Saturday. The centre back started the match before being substituted in the 67th minute.
