Rangers sign Rabbi Matondo from Schalke for undisclosed fee

Rangers sign Rabbi Matondo from Schalke in £2.5million deal

RANGERS have signed Rabbi Matondo from Schalke.

The 21-year-old joins the Ibrox club on a four-year deal.

The Wales international joins the Scottish giants in a deal worth around £2.5million from the Bundesliga outfit.

The tricky winger agreed personal terms and passed a medical earlier this week ahead of the switch.

Now, Giovanni van Bronckhorst has bolstered his attacking options further this summer.

Capped 11 times by Wales, he joins John Souttar, Antonio Colak and Tom Lawrence as the club's new signings in the window.

Matondo said: “I am absolutely buzzing to have signed for a club as big as Rangers.

“I am just looking forward to getting on the pitch at Ibrox in front of the amazing fans we have here at Rangers and I am excited.

“This is a big club with a massive history, and I just want to create more memories and more history here at the club.”

van bronckhorst added: "I’m really pleased to welcome Rabbi to Rangers. I spoke last week about my desire to add more attacking quality to my squad, and we all believe Rabbi will do that.

“He will bring many strong attributes to the team, and I am really looking forward to seeing him in training this afternoon for the first time."

He will wear the number 17 for Rangers.

Matondo came through the ranks at Cardiff and Manchester City before joining Schalke in an £11m switch back in January 2019.

Matondo has played more games on loan than he has for the first team.

He played at Stoke City as well as Cercle Brugge in Belgium

In total he made 32 appearances for Schalke and scored twice.

The majority of those games and both goals came in the 2019-20 season.

Ross Wilson said: “We have been quietly working to secure Rabbi’s signature for the last few weeks since the June internationals finished.

“We wanted to invest in a wide player this summer and we are excited with what Rabbi will bring to our group, with his speed and his general style of play.

"At 21 years-old there’s lots more to come from Rabbi and he will be a strong investment and addition to our group.”
