Rangers 'set to open talks' with Hearts over highly-rated star but face EPL competition

Rangers are set to open talks with Hearts over James Wilson - with interest coming from England's top flight in the rising star, according to a report.

Light Blues officials have written a letter to their Premiership rivals letting them know of their intensions to speak with the Scotland Under-16 cap over a switch to Ibrox say the Daily Record. The capital club are still fighting to convince the highly-rated striker that his long-term future should be at Tynecastle as interest mounts.

Wilson turns 16 next month and will be able to sign professional forms. The Jambos have high hopes for the youngster who has already been involved with Stevie Naismith’s under-18 squad but Rangers' long-term plan is to invest heavily in their academy and the Gorgie starlet could be the latest to join their ranks.

The likes of Lancelot Pollard, Greig Allen and Bailey Rice have all joined from fellow Scottish sides over the last 12 months while the likes of Zak Lovelace, Charlie McCann and Archie Stevens have all arrived from south of the border.

McCann has already landed top team minutes at Rangers this season while new boss Michael Beale has included Lovelace - who has been impressing at B team level in his first team training.

Nathan Patterson is the most high profile player to come through the academy in recent years with a big-money move to Everton. Leon King has made his mark this season due to the injury crisis in the defensive ranks at Ibrox. He tasted big Champions League minutes against the likes of Liverpool and Napoli. Alex Lowry has also been involved at first-team level before recent injury.
