Rangers see Cole Palmer loan transfer 'rejected' by Man City with starlet set for Etihad stay

Rangers have had an attempt to bring Cole Palmer north of the border from Man City booted out, according to a report.

The 20-year-old attacker is part of Pep Guardiola's first team squad and has featured 17 times in all competitions this season to date including nine outings in the English Premier League. Most of his appearances have come from the bench and he is yet to find the net this season. The England Under-21 international faces major competition in the attacking positions with the likes of Erling Haaland, Phil Foden, Julian Alvarez and Riyad Mahrez just a couple of the riches they poses in the ranks.

The Sun report that Michael Beale is the latest to get a knock back from the EPL giants with Phil Thomas stating a potential swoop was blocked with the youngster having a role to play this season. Brighton and Sheffield United are also reported to have tried to land him on a short-term deal but the promise of regular football at Ibrox hasn't been unable to convince City to part with the 20-year-old for the next six months states the same report.

Todd Cantwell has already arrived at Ibrox in this transfer window on a long-term deal from Norwich City while Nicolas Raskin is closing in on a move from Standard Liege. Rangers faced a lot of competition for the highly-regarded midfielder - particularly from Germany - but he has decided on a move north of the border to Govan.

Speaking at the weekend, the Rangers boss said: “There’s loads of stuff going on in the background. If we get them done I’ll be delighted. We’re all aligned, I’m up to speed.

“If we don’t get the work done now, we’ll do more work in the summer. It’s got to be the right players. I would like us to add a midfielder to the squad that’s powerful and who can run.

“I would like to add another centre-half to the squad and I think we’ll be looking at the goalie situation in the summer as well as looking for another No 9.

“Are we going to get all that done in the next 48 hours or is there more time in the summer? No one wants to strengthen the squad more than Ross Wilson, more than the board, more than myself. It's in our interest to build a strong Rangers and strong squad and team than we have right now."
