Rangers player ratings vs Ajax as Light Blues' defensive problems deepen in Champions League mauling

Rangers were handed a Champions League night to forget upon their return to the competition, losing to Ajax 4-0 in their Group A opener

The Light Blues were already in a fragile place after a sobering four-goal loss to Celtic at the weekend and conceding three against the champions of the Netherlands inside 33 minutes did not do anything to improve it. Edson Alvarez set the Eredivisie kings on their way before a brutal two goals in two minutes combo really left Rangers reeling.

First it was Steven Berghuis to hit the net with the help of a James Sands deflection and Mohammed Kudus left James Tavernier - the captain subbed at half-time - in the dust to make it three. A huge night at Ibrox next week awaits against Napoli after Ryan Jack's terrible pass set up Steven Bergwign for a fourth Ajax goal and they are in desperate need of a good result against Aberdeen on Saturday. Here is how we rated the Rangers players.

Jon McLaughlin - 7

An improved showing from the goalkeeper after a horror show at the weekend. Made three or four strong stops and was not culpable for any of the goals.

James Tavernier - 3

Got caught under the ball for Ajax's first and struggled again for the third before being hooked at half-time. A difficult night for the captain.

Connor Goldson - 4

Another at fault during the first goal as Rangers once again failed to deal with a set-piece. Struggled to get to grips with the Ajax forward line.

James Sands - 3

Lost his man for the first and deflected the second into his own net, albeit he's saved the ignominy of an own goal. A midfielder by trade despite several centre-back outings this season, and it showed in this one.

Borna Barisic - 5

Communication with the rest of the defence was non-existent but at least got back to make a big block. A terrific goal ruled out by VAR.

John Lundstram - 5

Put himself about as is the norm but looked up against it with the rest of his midfield team-mates not up to much.

Scott Wright - 3

Looked uncomfortable at this level and struggled to make an impact going forward, before being hooked at the break.

Glen Kamara - 4

Back at the base of midfield but was overrun pretty quickly and didn't give Lundstram much of a hand with the dirty work.

Ryan Kent - 3

Quiet again. Got in behind once to tee up Barisic for a goal but was offside. Didn't look too keen on helping defensively.

Malik Tillman - 3

Subbed at the break. Just like the Celtic game, the intensity looked too much for him and was ran out the game.

Antonio Colak - 4

Has started the season brightly for Rangers but was starved of service and couldn't make an impact on the game.

Leon King - 5

Some ask for the inexperienced at European level youngster to come on to a game 3-0 down, but didn't do a whole lot wrong on a shaky night for his peers.

Rabbi Matondo - 3

Came on at half-time but was not involved in this one, hardly getting a touch of the ball.

Steven Davis - 3

Brought on to help man the barricades and prevent further damage. Not a lot he could do.

Ryan Jack - 2

Came on, set up Ajax's fourth goal, headed down the tunnel at full-time. A night to forget.
