Rangers player ratings as three key players given 8 and one a 5 against Celtic

Here's how we rated Rangers players in the League Cup Final against Celtic.

Jack Butland: Saved his side early on with an outstanding double save from Kuhn and Hatate after a lightning Celtic break down the left flank. Was assured and solid throughout, using the ball well to prompt quick attacks. Made another incredible point-blank save from Kyogo. Had no chance with Celtic's goals, one a wicked deflection. Scored a well-hit penalty in the shoot-out. 8

James Tavernier: Performed much better against Daizen Maeda than has been the case in recent clashes. Looked after the Japanese with a much more aggressive display and continued his improved recent form. Booked for a clever tactical foul when Maeda was breaking. While the defending was solid, the delivery was below normal standards. 6

Leon Balogun: The Nigerian rarely lets anyone down and today was no exception. Was solid and made a number of last-gasp challenges where his pace proved crucial. Took some heavy knocks in the heat of the battle and went off with 20 minutes remaining with Sterling slotting in at centre-back. 7

Robin Propper: Had ups and downs through the game. Wasn't outstanding at the back but overall he kept both Kyogo and Idah subdued and can be happy enough with his showing against a tricky front three who posed major questions. 7

Jefte: Struggled against the electric Nicolas Kuhn defensively - who wouldn't with the German's current form? While he always looked to get forward, Kuhn had by far the best of the encounter. Unlucky to be booked late in the first half for a challenge. Subbed for Yilmaz as he began to visibly tire with an hour gone. 5

Nico Raskin: Tigerish performance in the Rangers engine room throughout but a crucial error gave Celtic the lead in the second half. A slack header back to Balogun was well short and left Daizen Maeda with just Butland to beat. Moment of madness aside, he was the best midfielder on the pitch and looks to be taking more responsibility and coming of age. 7

Mohamed Diomande: Won countless second balls and showed his quick feet to get out of tight situations. Probed well in the first half but struggled in the second until his moment of magic for the second goal. Turned Engels brilliantly and fired past the keeper for a memorable equaliser. Suddenly looking a more consistent force. 7

Ianis Hagi: Started in an unfamiliar left-wing role but often drifted inside to help in the engine room. It might not be his natural game but he worked extremely hard and put himself about. Only poor element of today's performance was a succession of sub-par corners. Has played a key role in Rangers' resurgence of late and can be proud of his showing. 8

Vaclav Cerny: Always menacing down the right flank but didn't have any decisive moments up against Greg Taylor until a stunning cross for Danilo to head home just 21 seconds after Celtic went 3-2 up.  Worked hard in tracking back and always looked capable of causing problems. 6

Nedim Bajrami: A very disciplined showing in keeping Callum McGregor out of the game, especially in the first half. Showcased his quality with some sharp attacking play and fired past Schmeichel with power when the chance presented itself to put Rangers ahead. Was guilty of a poor pass with his team four-on-one in a decisive break that could have put them 2-0 up. 8

Hamza Igamane: Took an early dunt in the ribs from Cameron Carter-Vickers and the American dished out some strong treatment throughout. It was Igamane's low drive that Schmeichel spilt to allow Bajrami to score the opening goal. Buzzed about but showed little of the magic that's made him a darling of the Ibrox fan base in recent matches.  6

Substitutes

Ridvan Yilmaz: Replace the knackered Jefte and like the Brazillian, struggled against the rampant Kuhn. His misjudgment in the lead-up to Celtic's third was a crucial mistake. 4

Dujon Sterling: On at centre-back for the injured Balogun with 20 minutes to go. Looked solid in a relatively unfamiliar position. Cautioned for a deliberate handball. 6

Danilo: Scored with his first touch, nodding home at close-range from Cerny's cross. Full of energy and threat when he came on and added life to Clement's attack. 6

Cyriel Dessers: Put himself about. Clattered into Carter-Vickers within moments of coming on and was booked for his trouble. 3

Kieran Dowell: Introduced in extra time to add energy in the middle of the pitch. 3

Connor Barron: Introduced for Diomande in extra time after the Ivorian was cramping up. 3
