It was an evening to forget at Ibrox as Liverpool's impressive second half performance helped them thump Rangers by seven goals to one.
Scott Arfield got Ibrox rocking as he put Gio van Bronckhorst' s men in front after 17 minutes of play. But it took the Reds just seven minutes to hit back when Roberto Firmino's header evened the scoring. It was all even at the break, with the home side hopeful ahead of the second 45.
It was certainly not to be however, with the ball making its way into Allan McGregor 's next six times in the second half to force Rangers into their biggest ever competitive defeat. It was Firmino who stepped up again to net a second, with Darwin Nunez also on the scoresheet alongside Harvey Elliot, who hit home for the first time in the Champions League. Mo Salah ripped through the Rangers defence to bag a hat-trick is just over six minutes Nothing short of incredible, making it a difficult night for the Govan side.
Here's the Record Sport verdict on how the men in light blue performed on a testing European night in Glasgow.
Rangers Ratings
ALLAN MCGREGOR: This time he hardly made a single save. But there wasn’t a great deal he could have done about any of them as his defence was torn apart. 4
JAMES TAVERNIER: Had some sloppy moments in possession but his sharp tackle helped set up the opener for Arfield. Posted missing as Liverpool ran riot after the break. 5
CONNOR GOLDSON: The big man did not put a foot wrong until his left thigh gave up on him at the end of the first half. Had been dealing superbly with Nunez. No surprise Rangers fell apart without him. 8
BEN DAVIES: Had a superb first half. Calm and composed on the ball, Alert and tidy in defence. But completely swamped by Liverpool in the second half. 6
BORNA BARISIC: Tried to link with Kent in the first half but careless with his deliveries from wide areas. Looked to have given up the ghost long before the end. 3
JOHN LUNDSTRAM: Set the tone early in the game. Moved the ball well and worked tirelessly out of possession. But could do nothing to stem the flow as Liverpool ran riot all around. 6
RYAN JACK: Snapped into tackles, harried and chased red shirts in the midfield and split them open with the pass for the opening goal. A fine night ended early when he limped off early in the second half. 7
SCOTT ARFIELD: Raised the roof with his expertly taken opener. A constant menace to Liverpool’s defence with his forward running throughout a strong first half. 7
FASHION SAKALA: Scared the wits out of Tsimikas with his pace on the Rangers right wing. But became totally detached after the break. 6
ANTONIO COLAK: Given his big chance in front of Alfredo Morelos and looked like a handful in the first half. A spectator through the cracks in his fingers throughout the second. 5
RYAN KENT: Looked bright at the start but faded quickly. Played no part in the second half before being subbed off. 4
SUBS
LEON KING: Took over from Goldson before the break and boy wasz he was thrown into the deep end. 5
STEVEN DAVIS: Replaced Jack on the hour just as things were going from bad to worse. 2
RABBI MATONDO: On for Sakala after Liverpool’s fourth. 1
ALFREDO MORELOS: Replaced Colak in 75 minutes. 1
