Rangers pinpoint Ross Stewart as a 'priority' if club face Alfredo Morelos exit this summer

Rangers pinpoint Ross Stewart as a 'priority' if club face Alfredo Morelos exit this summer

RANGERS have pinpointed Ross Stewart as their 'priority' if Alfredo Morelos knocks back a new contract at Ibrox, according to reports.

The former Ross County man has been heavily linked with a move to Giovanni van Bronckhorst's side after a stunning campaign for Sunderland.

Stewart banged in 26 goals during the Black Cats' promotion push this season, which resulted in a Wembley play-off win over Wycombe.

And The Northern Echo say that form has caught the eye of Rangers who may look to the striker market later this summer.

When asked about Stewart's future at Sunderland by the Echo earlier this season, manager Alex Neil replied: "I’ve got bigger things to concern myself about than trying to keep a player happy who’s got his own objectives in his career.

"The simple fact is I’ve got the Sunderland fans, the Sunderland community and the Sunderland club as a whole to concern myself with.

"Ross has done really well for us, but the simple fact is that if we can continue to make progress and get ourselves out of this league, then naturally players will want to be here and play here. It really is as simple as that.

"The simple fact is that he’s our contracted player. He’s done well, but he’s done well because he’s been given a chance at this club. I’m sure he’ll be respectful of that as well.

"But I’m not going into the remaining games worrying that if I don’t win them, or we don’t win them, then Ross might see his future elsewhere.

"I don’t think about that with any of the players, it doesn’t even cross my mind at the moment."

Morelos only has a year left on his current deal at Ibrox, so the Govan outfit may look to cash in on their star man this window.

If this is the case they will be forced to look for attacking reinforcements with just Kemar Roofe and Fashion Sakala under contract.
