Rangers 'make contact' with Serie A club over Josip Brekalo

Rangers have been linked with a move for Croatia international Josip Brekalo.

The 26-year-old plays for Fiorentina, but spent last season out on loan at Hajduk Split in his homeland.

Seemingly considered to be down the pecking order at the Serie A side, with two years left on his deal, now seems like the optimum time for the Italians to sell the attacker.

Brekalo can play on either wing or comfortably in the No.10 position.

He is a former teammate of former Gers defender Nikola Katic.

And according to Italian journalist Nicola Schira, Philippe Clement and his recruitment staff had enquired about the one-time £8.5m player.

He wrote on social media: "Rangers have asked for info on Josip Brekalo, who could leave Fiorentina in the next few days."

It's not yet clear whether any potential move would be a loan deal with an option to buy or a permanent transfer.

Brekalo has 35 caps to his name for his country, scoring on four occasions.

Meanwhile, nobody in Scottish football, not even their most wildly optimistic supporter, is giving Rangers a prayer of enjoying a successful 2024/25 campaign at the present moment in time.

Their summer recruitment drive has been, one or two exceptions aside, fairly underwhelming and their early-season form both at home and abroad has not been entirely convincing either.

On top of that, the fact they are having to play their home matches at Hampden and not at Ibrox due to delays to the redevelopment work on the Copland Stand is far from ideal.

But Marvin Andrews has seen the Glasgow club’s prospects of lifting silverware written off by all and sundry – including by their own players – before and knows from personal experience that things do not always work out entirely as expected.
