Rangers legend hopes to inspire 'the next Scotland players' after appearance in Cambuslang charity match

The body might not hold up as well as it used to - but former Rangers defender Marvin Andrews still hopes to be a shining light for aspiring youngsters.

Now 46, the ex-centre-back featured for a Rangers legends team last weekend in the Billy Drummond Memorial Match, which they lost 5-2 against a Cambuslang Rangers legends side.

Andrews pulled up with a muscle injury at Camby's Somervell Park but was still a hit with the fans in attendance, both young and old.

A Scottish League Cup winner with Livingston and one-time Rangers Players' Player of the Year award winner, the Trinidad and Tobago legend also ran out for Hamilton, Albion Rovers and Clyde during a 24-year playing career than ended in 2016.

Young fans who greeted him for photos wouldn't have watched the former defender - now a hospitality ambassador at Ibrox - in action during his prime.

But Andrews hopes that by rolling back the years along with former players such as Colin Hendry and Charlie Miller, it can motivate them to take up the sport themselves.

He said: "It's always good. Football is something I have played all my life so every game you get to play as an ex-pro is great.

"It's great to get into the dressing room with the guys and have a bit of chat with them. It's good.

"A lot of the young ones who watch these games haven't seen me play - I left Rangers 18 years ago. For them to come and show some of the things I used to do when I did play, it's good.

"It's a good thing as they are the next generation. They are the next Scotland players, potentially. It's important.

"Hopefully it can inspire them to go on and play football, or whatever they want to do."
