Rangers boss Gio van Bronckhorst has revealed Filip Helander has suffered a setback during his comeback from long-term injury.
But star striker Alfredo Morelos is stepping up his return bid from thigh surgery and is back working with the first team ahead of the new season. While the news on the club's talisman is encouraging it's another blow for the Sweden international who has endured a rotten run of luck due to an ongoing foot injury which has kept him out since April.
Rangers have been active this summer but van Bronckhorst will be keen to get two key first team stars back into contention as he gears up ahead of crucial Champions League qualifiers sandwiched between the start of the new Scottish Premiership season. The Ibrox boss said: “For some players it was their first game of pre-season and I was really happy nearly everyone could feature and get minutes. We prepare now for a big week because we are playing two really good quality opponents. After that we prepare for the start of the season.
“Morelos is doing partial training with the team now, Filip is still not training with us he had a setback so we have to wait and see how that is developing. Fashion got a knock in training on Thursday. He trained Friday but wasn’t feeling 100 per cent so we decided not to take him. Alex is still in recovery.”
Sakala established himself as key contributor during the closing stages of last season and will be aiming to build on that despite new signings Rabbi Matondo, Tom Lawrence and Malik Tillman eyeing minutes behind the main striker.
