Rangers' hopes of signing Italian defender 'dashed' by Inter Milan

Rangers' hopes of signing Spezia defender Nicolo Bertola have been dashed, according to reports.

Technical director Nils Koppen wanted to bring the central defender to Ibrox on a free transfer in the summer, although Serie A giants Inter Milan have swooped in and, along with Bologna and Torino, are interested in a move for the 21-year-old, claims the Daily Mail.

Despite playing for Spezia, who currently sit third in Serie B, Bertola has impressed with his performances this campaign.

The Italy under-21 international has made 20 appearances in all competitions, scoring three goals and assisting another from defence.

While Koppen and Co. were interested in a move, with admirers elsewhere in Italy, including the country's reigning champions, it looks like a deal to bring Bertola to Govan might not come to fruition.

Clement, though, has several options at central defence between now and the end of the season.

John Souttar recently returned to training with Clinton Nsiala, Robin Propper, and new signing Rafael Fernandes all available to the Belgian manager.

Rangers face Union St. Gilloise tonight as they round off the initial stage of the Europa League.
