Rangers hero Nacho Novo wants Ards manager job - reports

Rangers hero Nacho Novo is one of several names being linked with the vacant managerial position at Ards Football Club.

The Newtownards Chronicle has reported that Novo applied for the job last Sunday.

London-based Novo previously played in the Irish League during a spell with Glentoran.

The 42-year-old spent one season with the Glens in 2016/17, scoring three goals in 23 appearances for the East Belfast men.

Novo was also linked with the Oval club's managerial position in 2018 following Gary Haveron's sacking.

Other names being linked with the Ards job include Matthew Tipton who recently parted company with Portadown, and ex-Warrenpoint Town boss Stephen McDonnell.

Former Cliftonville midfielder and current manager of St James' Swifts, Barry Johnston, is another name understood to be in the hat.

Ards chairman Warren Patton told the Chronicle: "We will not be rushing into this. It is important we make the right decision.

"That's why we have appointed our development squad director Daryl Phillips as interim manager.

"He will be in charge for Friday night's (Irish Cup) game against Newry City. We will see where we stand after that."
