Rangers handed major Napoli injury boost with key man ruled out of Champions League clash

Rangers have been handed a major Champions League boost with Napoli forward Victor Osimhen ruled out of the next week's scheduled tie through injury.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst's men made their long awaited return to Europe's premier competition this midweek after overcoming Union Saint-Gilloise and PSV in qualifying. Reward for dining at the top table of club football was a Battle of Britain with Liverpool, Dutch giants Ajax and the Serie A outfit.

The Light Blues got off to a nightmare start as they were dumped 4-0 by former team-mate Calvin Bassey and his Ajax side in Amsterdam on Wednesday night. The hammering came off the back of a defeat by the same score to Old Firm rivals Celtic in the first derby showdown of the season. It remains to be seen whether Tuesday's game will go ahead following the sad passing of Queen Elizabeth II on Thursday afternoon. The SPFL card up and down the country for this weekend has been postponed as a mark of respect.

However, should the game get the green light then Rangers will be boosted by the news that the visitors will arrive without one of their key men.

The hitman has fired two goals and one assist in Italy's top flight this season while he also started the thrashing of Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool before coming off injured. The club have now confirmed he has suffered a grade two hamstring injury.

A club statement read : "Victor Osimhen underwent diagnostic tests on Friday morning which showed a grade two right hamstring injury.

"The Napoli forward started physio treatment for the injury on Thursday."

Napoli has made a solid start to the new Serie A season and remain unbeaten after five games with three wins and two draws as well as their opening game win in the Champions League.
