Rangers grab WORST EVER Champions League tag as Ajax defeat secures unwanted history

Rangers boast the worst record of any side to enter the Champions League group stage following the 3-1 defeat to Ajax.

Gio van Bronckhorst's side landed a nightmare group and the loss at the hands of the Dutch champions make it six defeats on the spin, as Napoli, Liverpool and Alfred Schreuder's side racked up huge margins of victory in sweeping aside last season's Europa League finalists. Going into the last game of the group stage against Ajax the Scottish Premiership side knew they had to avoid a two-goal defeat to risk overturning Dinamo Zagreb's record low point.

The Croatian side finished their dreadful 2011/12 campaign with no points, three goals scored and 22 conceded for a goal difference of -19. The defeat at Ibrox leaves the Ibrox side with a record of scored two, and conceded 22, leaving them on a goal difference of -20 on their return to the Champions League group stage after a 12-year absence.

There had been hopes that Barcelona would spare Rangers blushes as they faced winless Viktoria Pilzen. The Czech league leaders faced the Catalan giants on the final matchday without a win and sitting on goal difference of -17.

However, Viktoria put in a battling display on home turf against Barca, falling to a 4-2 defeat. That means they end the campaign with a narrowly better return than Rangers at -19.

It's not the first time Rangers have failed to win a single Champions League group stage game. The 2009/10 campaign which included successive defeats at the hands of Sevilla, a defeat and a draw against Stuttgart, before a disappointing 4-1 home defeat to Romanian minnows FC Urziceni who also secured a draw against the Light Blues.
