Rangers free transfer ruled out by Giovanni van Bronckhost as Ibrox boss names 'main options'

Giovanni van Bronckhorst has ruled out dipping into the free market amidst a defensive injury crisis for Rangers.

Stalwart Connor Goldson who has only missed 13 games in five seasons limped off before a second half Champions League mauling at the hands of Liverpool. Injury fears were also sparked over the fitness of Ben Davies ahead of Rangers Premiership clash with Motherwell, but Van Bronckhorst has confirmed that Davies is available for Sunday’s game at Fir Park. Ryan Jack also suffered more injury heartache, with the Rangers boss confirming both players are out with muscular injuries.

The loss of vice-captain Goldson has led to calls for Rangers to explore the free market with experienced stoppers such as former England International Gary Cahill currently without a club.

But Van Bronckhorst insists the club are well equipped to deal with further setbacks despite an injury list including international defenders John Souttar and Filip Helander.

The Rangers boss said: “Of course when you have so many injuries you look at options within your squad and the academy – and you can also look at free agents.

“These free agents are players who haven’t played a lot recently or have just come back from injury but we are open to any additions.

“You have to have the right one so for now we are not looking to bring any players in.

“We have natural central defenders in Ben Davies, Leon King and James Sands. John Lundstram has played there in the past as well so they are the main options at the moment.”
